Ъ - The hard sign - твёрдый знак - makes the preceding consonant sound hard even if the following vowel is supposed to soften it. For example, подъезд you should read as pod+yezd.

You can write Ъ only in middle of word, but Ь you can write anywhere

If you studying russian you must remember, Russian so hard but russians very rarely speaking on clean russian lang, thats a lot of slengs, and you can create your own sleng/russia
Example:
Word «Смотреть» that means look you can say like
Зыришь
Смареть
Глядеть

Как такого звука своего ъ, собственно, не имеет 😳
Но если после него стоят "е", "ю", или "я", ъ читается как "й"
