FIVE CHECKS BEFORE REPLACING A CATALYTIC CONVERTER
Converters don’t fail on their own, complete these five checks before replacing a catalytic converter:
- Retrieve / repair all PCM trouble codes, check for any available TSBs or PCM re-flash updates
- Repair all exhaust leaks
- Make sure vehicle is in proper fuel control
- Always check for internal coolant leaks and excessive oil consumption
- Make sure you have the right part for the application

WHY A CATALYTIC CONVERTER FAILSConverters don’t fail on their own; failure is usually a symptom of a larger problem. This is why it is important to identify the root cause of the failure and perform the repair prior to installing a new converter. Most catalytic converter failures fall under one of three categories:
|
DIRECT-FIT VS. UNIVERSAL CONVERTERSWalker universal fit catalytic converters have a customizable design with expandable bushings to adapt to connector pipes based on the repair. They may require specialized fabrication and welding for installation. Walker pre-bent routings hangers and flanges for OE-style direct-fit catalytic converters attach to the exhaust system for a direct-fit bolt-off, bolt-on solution. No matter what you select, all converters must meet the emission requirements of the vehicle and cannot be chosen by size alone. |
WHAT TO DO IF CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON?Troubleshoot an illuminated check engine light by making sure the gas and oil caps are on tight and that the oil dipstick is seated correctly. If the light remains lit, it could be triggered by a faulty oxygen sensor, failing catalytic converter, bad spark plugs, malfunctioning thermostat or bad mass air flow sensor. If the light remains on, make sure to make an appointment with your service provider as soon as possible. |
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EPA AND CARB CONVERTERSEPA-compliant catalytic converters are for use on EPA or Federal emissions certified-vehicles. EPA-compliant catalytic converters cannot be sold or installed in California and Colorado and in certain circumstances in Maine and New York. In those states, you must install a CARB-compliant catalytic converter on CARB emissions certified vehicles in the states of California and Colorado, on all vehicles. CARB-compliant converters contain more catalyst material in order to converter emissions more efficiently and comply with stricter emissions reduction requirements. Check the vehicle’s emissions control information label and consult your state’s aftermarket converter regulations to select the right catalytic converter. |

I bought this Walker brand and it eliminated to P0430/P0420 codes and my truck will now pass inspection again. I had these installed by a local shop and they were a perfect fit, taking just under 2 hours for the whole install.
Finished install on my 2006 Frontier Nismo KC. Read reviews before install and it helped immensely! I went and bought several sets of M10 nuts n bolts n washers expecting to have to hammer-out the existing bolts due to misalignment. While the bolts were in fact misaligned, I was able to fit them in with aid of a hammer....they seemed aimed out so I got both bolts at least into the hole and hammered it until i could get the nut on the treads......then just wrenched those bad-boys on tight. although I don't have stock manifolds, I have JBA shorty headers. The hardest part of the install was simply accessing the header-to-cat nuts and getting them off! it took me a good 1 1/2hrs just to get 2 nuts off.....they were seized on good. didn't have my truck jacked up either....just removed the wheel well liner. (watch out for those brake lines n other tubes in the way). Once those 3 bolts n nuts were removed it was an EASY job. ............UNTIL......VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!------->
On the exit-end of the stock cats there are bolts.......you only remove 2 nuts. the Walker cats don't have those so YOU NEED TO BUY AT LEAST 2 BOLTS N MATCHING NUTS PER CAT TO INSTALL! AT LEAST M10....Luckily for me I had bought bolts n nuts expecting to bust off/strip a couple while trying to remove the stock cats from the headers....so instead I used them on the exit end of the cat. I reused my existing gaskets with no leaks. (they are rather new since my headers were installed about 6 months ago). These are a lot smaller than the stock cats too. I wasnt sure at first if they'd fit right but they did in the end with some persuasion. :) I did get a CEL when I started the truck but it was only because I didnt properly plug my O2 sensor back.....it was loose. I got the P1168 & P0051....plugged the sensor back in properly and cleared the code......didnt come back.
Hope this helps!!!!! HAVE FUN!!! ;P
Update- 5 years and I need to replace this one (bank 2/drivers side). I was doing exhaust work and stripped the o2 sensor threads to where it won't come out of bung. Seemed tight enough to not leak, but after reassembly, the rear flange has rusted thin so much that it can't seal (I've torn my exhaust apart and reassembled many times, so the flanges have seen some fatigue). With prices what they are now, I decided to go with a different brand in stainless to avoid this in the future.
