Sea-Based X-Band Radar Antenna

Scope/Solutions

The Sea-Based X-Band Radar (SBX) is an important component of the Missile Defense Agency’s Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) and consists of an advanced X-Band Radar (XBR) housed inside an air-inflated fabric radome and mounted on a semi-submersible, self-propelled platform with twin-hulled pontoons and multiple towers. The platform is 240 ft wide, 390 ft long, and more than 280 ft from its keel to the top of the radome. The XBR was designed and built by Raytheon under contract with Boeing. SGH assisted with the structural and mechanical design.

SGH reviewed and evaluated the design for each structural and mechanical component of the radar with respect to the individual and total performance goals. Highlights of our work include:

  • Developing an integrated detailed finite element model of the radar and the platform
  • Predicting the dynamic performance of the radar system and platform vibration effects
  • Computing demands and capacities, and quantifying risks
  • Proposing modifications, which were incorporated in the design
  • Performing analyses for the various lifting and moving operations of the four-million-pound radar structure, weighing 4 million pounds
