빌 게이츠가 최근 자신의 블로그 ‘게이츠 노트’에 공개한 ‘세상에서 가장 치명적인 동물’이란 제목의 인포그래픽이 해외네티즌들 사이에서 화제가 되고 있다.
해마다 가장 많은 피해를 입힌 순으로 숫자를 집계한 이 도표는 압도적인 1위로 모기를 꼽았다. 모기는 해마다 총 72만 5,000명의 사람을 사망에 이르게 하며 말라리아, 뎅기열, 황열병, 뇌염 등 모기가 옮기는 질병으로 인류를 위협하고 있다고 한다.
스페인어로 ‘작은 파리’라는 뜻을 가진 모기 (mosquito)는 이름에 맞지 않게 상상을 초월하는 피해를 입히는 질병을 옮긴다. 또한 모기는 2,500 종이 넘으며 남극을 제외한 모든 곳에 서식 하고있다고 한다.
게이츠는 말라리아는 인류의 절반을 위협하고 있으며 해마다 수조 달러의 생산피해를 입힌다며 이렇게 위협적인 동물에 대한 특집방송은 없느냐고 토로하기도 했다. 그는 “그래서 이번 한 주 동안 모기특집을 진행하려 한다”며 앞으로 게재될 글의 주제를 예고하기도 했다.
보통 무서운 동물, 위험한 동물을 꼽으라 하면 사자, 악어, 상어 등을 꼽지만 게이츠가 제시한 순위에 의하면 모기에 이어 2위는 인간 (475,000명)이 뽑혀 씁쓸함을 안겨주기도 했다. 이어 3위에 뱀 (50,000명), 4위에 개 (25,000명), 5위에 체체파리 (10,000명) 순으로 순위가 나타났다.
게이츠는 말라리아를 옮기는 가장 큰 원인인 모기에 대한 경고를 전세계에 알리기 위해 이런 글을 게재한 것으로 “빌과 멜린다 게이츠 재단”은 말라리아를 퇴치하기 위한 운동을 벌이고 있다.

The deadliest animal in the world
Microsoft founder Bill Gates announced that he will be promoting a “Mosquito Week,” as people are generally not aware of mosquitoes’ deadly impact on humans.
On Gates Notes, Bill Gates’ official blog, a chart showing the deadliest animals in the world has surprised many visitors.
Under the chart, Gates explained that despite their innocuous-sounding name -- Spanish for “little fly” -- mosquitoes spread devastating diseases.
Most of the deaths caused by mosquitoes are from malaria, which kills more than 600,000 per year, threatens half of the world’s population and costs billions of dollars in lost productivity annually.
Besides malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever and encephalitis are also among the deadliest mosquito-borne diseases.
“Mosquitoes kill 50,000 times as many people, but if there’s a TV channel that features Mosquito Week, I haven’t heard about it,” Gates added, explaining why he is promoting Mosquito Week on Gates Notes.
