An elephant that escaped a circus in Mexico has come to a tragic death.

Indra the elephant was killed by a moving bus

Indra the elephant was trying to cross a highway in the busy town when it was struck down by a bus in the early hours of the morning.

The force of the elephant hitting the passenger vehicle was so tremendous that the bus driver was also killed in the collision.

Four other passengers were taken to a nearby hospital.

According to reports Indra had escaped the circus by knocking down a metal door as the keeper was arriving for feeding time.

The five-tonne elephant wandered through two neighbourhoods before venturing out onto the highway.
