(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – The 2011 National Golden Gloves Championships closed with a bang on Saturday night as 10 new national champions were crowned at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind.

Light flyweight Santos Vasquez (Sparks, Nev.) won the first title of the night, defeating Oscar Mojica (Dallas, Texas) in the their final round showdown.

Louie Byrd (Denver, Colo.) accomplished his goal of winning four National Golden Gloves titles at four different weight classes on Saturday night. His victory over Stephon Young (St. Louis, Mo.) earned Byrd a national championship at the new flyweight division of 114 pounds to add a third title to his previous championships at 106, 108, and 112 pounds.

In bantamweight action, Tramaine Williams (New Haven, Conn.) took the National Golden Gloves championship with a victory over Antonio Nieves (Cleveland, Ohio).

Lightweight Erick DeLeon (Lincoln Park, Mich.) won his first national title as a U.S. citizen with another title at the National Golden Gloves. DeLeon defeated Louis Cruz (New York, N.Y.) in the lightweight championship bout to claim the 2011 lightweight crown.

2010 USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist Michael Reed (Washington D.C.) earned the top spot on the medal podium with a victory in the light welterweight championship contest. Reed defeated George Rincon (Carrollton, Texas) in the final round bout to earn his first major national championship.

The welterweight title bout showcased a match-up between Arthur Trujillo (Easton, Pa.) and 2010 USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist Alex Martin (Chicago, Ill.). Trujillo kept Martin from his first National Golden Gloves Championships, pulling out the victory to win the welterweight crown.

Jesse Hart (Philadelphia, Pa.) once again held off youngster Daquan Arnett (Orlando, Fla.) in their middleweight showdown. The two faced off for the second time in the National Golden Gloves finals, and the second contest resulted in the same outcome. Hart’s victory earned the Philly native his first National Golden Gloves title.

Fresh off his efforts at the USA vs. Mexico Dual, light heavyweight Caleb Plant (Ashland, Tenn.) won his first major national championship. Plant put an end to Jerry Odom’s (Bowie, Md.) run through the tournament in their light heavyweight final round bout. Odom, who entered the bout fresh off two straight stoppage victories, couldn’t duplicate his feat in the championship bout and Plant to took home the light heavyweight title.

2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials super heavyweight champion Michael Hunter (Las Vegas, Nev.) entered his final round contest with Robert Jekabson (Chicago, Ill.) with four straight stoppage victories under his belt. Jekabson managed to take Hunter the distance but couldn’t end his winning streak. Hunter closed the event with a championship round victory over Jekabson to win his first National Golden Gloves title as well as his first tournament victory at the heavyweight division. In addition to his gold medal, Hunter was named the winner of the Golden Boy award, given to the Outstanding Boxer of the Tournament.

Super heavyweight Lenroy “Cam” Thompson (Lenexa, Kansas) added another title to his ever-growing trophy case with a win over Donovan Dennis (Davenport, Iowa) in final round action.
