Bible Story Craft for Elijah Goes to Heaven in a Chariot of Fire

Bible Story Craft – Elijah Goes to Heaven in Flaming Chariot

Materials:

1. For Elijah’s mantle (cape): a piece of heavy cloth, or construction paper, colors as you like

2. For the flaming chariot, cardboard, or heavy construction paper; gold, orange, yellow and red paint, felt pens or crayons.

Instructions:

1. Have a piece of cloth to be Elijah’s mantle (cape) or trace the mantle (cape) onto construction paper and color it as you like.

2. Trace the chariot onto cardboard or heavy construction paper, and color the chariot gold, and the fire orange, yellow and red to look like fire.

Explain to the children how Elijah knew that the LORD was going to take him to heaven, and how he told Elisha not to follow him, but how Elisha refused to leave Elijah. Tell them that when Elijah asked Elisha what he wanted, Elisha said that he wanted a double portion of Elijah’s spirit… tell them that Elijah told Elisha that if he saw Elijah taken up to heaven, his desire would be granted.

Then tell them how the chariot of fire appeared drawn by horses of fire, and Elijah went up to heaven, but his mantle (cape) fell and Elisha picked it up. Tell them how Elisha carried on as God’s prophet in the place of Elijah.

It is very important that the children understand that Elijah was not dead when the LORD took him to heaven. Only Enoch and Elijah have ever been taken to heaven without dying.
