We’re on letter “E” for our ABCs of the Bible crafts, a great series of Bible School Craft Ideas.
I’m excited to share with you a wonderful “hands-on” DIY Elijah’s Fiery Chariot Bible craft that will teach your child about the miracle of Elijah going to heaven. I’ve also included a free printable to help make duplicating this craft easy. This letter craft is “E” for Elijah’s Fiery Chariot!
Bible Story – 2 Kings 2
This is the story of when Elijah was taken to heaven by God and was separated from Elisha. Elisha and Elijah were close companions and workers for the Lord. Elisha begged to see Elijah taken into heaven and asked if he could receive a double portion of Elijah’s God given spirit. Elijah told Elisha that if saw him taken into heaven that he would receive a double portion of his spirit.
As the story continues, we learn that Elisha was blessed with the glorious sight of Elijah being swept up into heaven. A fiery chariot drawn by fiery horses and a mighty whirlwind picked Elijah up and he was gone. It must have been an incredible sight to behold!
“Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.” 2 Kings 2:11
To really understand the whole story for yourself, please read the entire second chapter of 2 Kings.
This DIY Elijah’s Fiery Chariot craft is a wonderful way for a child to act out the story, with a hands-on prop, while a parent reads the story from the Bible to him.
Materials Needed for this Craft
- Thick orange contact paper
- Stapler
- Cardboard
- Glue
- Brown magic marker
- Scissors
- Wooden peg person
- 1.5 feet of twine
- Orange and red party streamers
- Hole punch
Here is the printable that was hand-drawn by me. I hope it is a helpful guide for reproducing this craft.
First of all, cut the chariot outline from the printable. Draw an outline of the chariot onto the orange contact paper. 1. Staple the two pieces of the chariot together as pictured in the photo below. This creates a pocket for the wooden peg man to fit into. 2. Cut strips of red and orange streamers to cover the top part of the chariot. 3. Gather the streamers together into a bunch at the top and staple them onto the front of the chariot. 4. Cut out the wheel shapes from the printable. Trace the two wheels onto cardboard and cut them out. Glue the wheels onto the chariot on both the front and back side. Staple the wheels in a couple places if needed to hold it together. 5. Use the brown magic marker to color the wheels as pictured below.
The next part of this craft activity is the horse. (1. Skip number one – this was the first hand-drawn horse outline that I made.) 2. Start by cutting the horse outline out from the printable. 3. Trace the outline of the horse onto the cardboard. 4. Cut the cardboard horse out of the cardboard. Cut from different angles for the tight corners. 5. Line up the horse next to the chariot.
The last part of this craft is connecting the horse to the chariot. 1. I cut about a foot of twine and wrapped it around the horses head like a bridle. 2. I tied the looped twine in the back to secure it. 3. Next I looped the twine around the top of the horses head and under the neck loop and pulled it tight. 4. I punched a hole into the front of the chariot for the twine to pass through. 5. I tied a knot in the twine after passing it through the hole in the chariot.
