Based on 2 Kings 2:1-14
The sun beat down on Elisha as he plowed the field. Sweat trickled down his face. He wondered what life would be like when he got older.
“Elisha,” a voice called. “Come here.”
Elisha had been expecting his father to call him in for supper. When he turned around, he froze. It wasn’t his father; it was the great prophet, Elijah!
The prophet took off his coat and gave it to Elisha.
Elisha gasped. “Does this mean you’re calling me to be a prophet?” he asked.
“Yes.” Elijah smiled. “Say a quick farewell to your parents and friends. There is work to be done in Israel.”
After saying goodbye, Elisha set out with Elijah. He learned so much about God by being friends with the prophet.
One day, Elijah said, “I am going into the wilderness. You don’t have to come.” Elisha went with him anyway. During their journey, they reached the Jordan River. Elijah took off his coat.
“What are you doing?” Elisha asked.
“Wait and see,” Elijah said.
When Elijah put his cloak in the water, whoosh! The waters parted.
This makes me think of the stories about Moses and the Red Sea, Elisha thought.
A few days later, they came to an open field.
“Is there anything you want from God?” Elijah asked.
“Yes,” Elisha replied. “I want the power God has given you, but more.”
“Such a wish can only be granted by God,” Elijah said. “But I think it is a wise choice.”
Suddenly, fire surrounded them. A chariot of fire lifted Elijah up to heaven. He left his coat behind. Elisha picked up the coat and headed back to the river.
Elisha prayed, asking God for help. He struck the water with Elijah’s coat, and the waters parted again! Elisha knew that God had fulfilled his request.
